I love how eafd acknowledges it as a problem and is probably a prime suspect in changing topics of threads.
Although i will admit i have done so a few times..

but back on topic! why not, once the thread goes off the topic and continues to stay that way (more and more people contribute to the off topic material), a mod can then split the thread into two, where one is the old topic, and the other is newly ongoing topic (that which was off topic before lol). its just if you do that, all i ask that the mod should leave a little note, in small print as a footnote of the first post in the thread. this note should state what was done and when. for example:

New thread split on 9/8/10. Parent thread: link.
