Pandemonium Ventrilo Server 24/7- HOWTO

Well, I couldn't help myself and got everything done today.

Alright, so I've set up a Ventrilo server just for the clan to use at any time they please. We definitely should use this during clan wars; this may become a requirement.

SETUP:

Download Ventrilo here: http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php

After you install it, set up a new user by clicking the arrow next to the "User Name" label:

The only other field you should fill in is "Phonetic", which is what the robot will read your name out aloud as. Make it short but identifiable, e.g. Gilgamesh993 -> gil

Then, add a new server by clicking the arrow next to the "Server" field:

The hostname should be fictive.tk, port should be 3784, and the password should be

At this point you can connect to the server, hopefully. If you can't, you'll have to unblock port 3784 from your firewall.

The default talk button is CTRL. You can change this in the settings.



For those who like tinkering with this stuff, I'd like some suggestions for voice codecs. I need a good balance of clarity with bitrate (obviously so as this is running on my home server. If vent gets too greedy I'll start to lag in CA, the server is on the same network).

Currently I'm using 3,5 Speex (8 KHz, 16 bit, 5 Qlty) 1502 bytes/sec.

Man, fuck Vent. I just found out that the server you can download off their site only supports 8 damn clients at one time, to have more you need to pay for a slot on a stupid Vent-approved hoster.

Damnit.

I might look into various Ventrilo alternatives (e.g TeamSpeak, Mumble)

Mumble is open source which is really really nice. Also it has unlimited slots

Hey..try Raidcall..I'm messing with it and its pretty good..there's no personal server that you can create, theres a main central server but you can create your own room that stay perm forever and it has very good voice sound..check it out..I have a room that I use for my sons and me to play games in..but we can create a dedicated Pande room..

Yeah there's like this one pub server for TS 2 that I used to create rooms with friends all the time. then again, it's not like we'll ever get more than 8 people here amiright? but yeah iuno if the clan becomes a bit more active I might consider this. Recently I saw a pandemonium member on Top 5 and he was someone I didn't know lol. But yeah this is pretty cool I might check it out sometime just to mess with eafd

I'm trying out Mumble, I'll take a look at Raidcall.

I have a Mumble server set up now, it was super easy and I just had to make an apt-get call. You can connect to it using hostname fictive.tk; nothing else really matters as long as you keep the port number the default.

It should come up with a security or authentication error, but that's because it's the first time you've connected to that particular Mumble server.
