Boot Up Time
I was wondering but is there any way to make the booting up time faster when you start the computer? Besides going msconfig and ticking off certain programs you don't need (and I need quite a few really), is there any other way? My friends just reboot the comp and wipe everything, but I don't wanna do that cause I don't have an external hard drive (...yet )

Uhh, clear out your registry files? Use RegCleaner or w/e it's called. It takes out the registery files for things that you may have deleted or uninstalled, and it helped improve performance for me a little..
Or you could just reformat. :U

I have like several things. I got this thing that helps me defrag, even has something called boot time defrag. I have this other thing that helps me clear stuff like registry stuff. Or I just use CCleaner. But still, I'S LAGGY T_T I guess Igotta deal with it

Re: Boot Up Time
Defrag doesn't do much.
I'd reformat. I try to do so every half year or so...pretty useful in maintenance n all.

Re: Boot Up Time
You get your os...say Windows 7, and burn it on a disc. You then go into bios and set your boot drive/thingy to your cd/dvd drive. You then start up the computer and right click on the drive, say C:, and click reformat.
Then you just restart, insert the disc, install the OS, install all your other shit, and enjoy.
It just takes like 5 hours, and backing things up can take longer.

Re: Boot Up Time
Isn't that the same as like rebooting the comp?

Re: Boot Up Time
It clears your hard drive.
In essence, you just got a new computer...but with the same hardware and software.

Yeah...that's exactly what I don't want to do lolol. If I had an external with like 500gb-1TB or something, I'd have done this long ago. Sigh, whatever -_-

Re: Boot Up Time
Well unless you have like 50 gb's of music like I do...and like 100 movies...you shouldn't have to worry.
Most of the essential programs can be downlaoded from ninite.com, the others shouldn't be too hard.

Well, no, it's games and the likes. I don't like redownloading 7+ gbs of games *cough cough* and holy shit you have 50 gb of music. I only have about 5gb so far....
And yes, my anime and movies and stuff. I have a good 200 gb of games and 200 gb of anime I'd say.

Re: Boot Up Time
THere's only a few things that can really be done to speed up your computer:
1. Free up space..you'll want atleast 20 percent free -so if u have 100GB u'll want atleast 20GB free..
2. disable all unnecesarry items in MSCONFIG
3. If you have Nortons, McAffess or any other Internet Security Suits, remove them and use any free AV only program. Those suits slows down the computer.
4. Use CCleaner and clean our all temp folders, registry errors, etc.
5. Unless your using windows 7, it has a auto defrag software that run once a week, if you dont use win 7, then use something like Auslogic defrag and do the "FULL complete" defrag, not just the normal one.
6. Change your theme to Windows XP classic, it'll look ugly but will help woth the speed. Make sure you do not have a picture as your desktop background and that you do not have ALOT of icons on your desktop, all those things slows down the computer.

3)I'm using ESET Smart Security. That good?
4) Way ahead of you
5) I has something called Smart Defrag. That good?
6) Hm I guess I'll take off the picture and I've already kept very few icons as is.
Thanks Daddy

Re: Boot Up Time
Oh yea, as for antivirus software, there really is no difference between paid and free ones, other than subscription dates and "premium" items.
I'd recommend Microsoft Security Essentials. Made by Microsoft, free, insanely low profile, effective, etc.
If you really want to be safe though, you could have MSE with Comodo Firewall, which is pretty much all you need for an average/above average user.
Caution though, to install MSE, you need a genuine version of Windows, so any cracked version won't necessarily work.
/my2pennies.

Re: Boot Up Time
Well yeah, and I don't has it of course. So MSE's out the window. That's why I use ESET Smart Security instead. I find it nice if you know what you're doing.
